Denture Cost

For decades, some dentists and patients alike have believed that the one key advantage of false teeth over dental implants is that removable dentures cost less. Yet put into perspective, this belief is perhaps as unfounded as the myths surrounding the Loch Ness Monster, or Big Foot for that matter. Dentures cost patients in a myriad of ways, but perhaps their greatest toll is a severely compromised quality of life. If you thought that you could sacrifice some comfort for a cheaper tooth replacement solution, think again. The dentures cost you pay today is far from a one-time investment in your long term oral health…

Dentures Cost: What You Pay in Quality of Life

Removable dentures are rigid prosthetic devices used to provide edentulous (not having any original adult teeth left at all) and near-edentulous people with teeth that enable them to chew their food and look as close to normal as possible given the circumstances. However, because they are not permanently fixed in the mouth like dental implants are, they rely upon the gums and underlying bone ridge for support. This frequently causes pain, discomfort and the development of sores that are not permitted to heal.

Removable dentures harbor food and bacteria, causing bad breath in addition to other impediments: your ability to smile with confidence, chew harder and tougher foods and taste properly. But this is just the tip of the ice berg. Dentures cost you your jaw bone health. Without the important source of stimulation the roots of the teeth provide the jaw bone with, it begins to atrophy and ‘shrink’. As a result, patients begin to notice that the ability of their false teeth to fit the natural contours of the gums and underlying jaw bone deteriorates over the years. This not only leads to their greater shifting around (causing additional discomfort and irritation of the gums), but also necessitates refitting.

Dentures Cost: What You Pay in the Long Term

Dentures can cost more than dental implants in the long run! Owing to the need for refitting every few years or so as a result of bone loss in the jaw (an inexorable result of tooth loss) and repeat expenses, such as anesthetic gels, messy adhesives, cleaning pastes and associated products, dentures cost an exorbitant amount. Dental implants on the other hand, if placed properly by an experienced and qualified dentist, can last decades to a lifetime without the need for any restorations or additional products. Not only do these ingenious dental devices feel and function like natural healthy teeth, but they are quite indistinguishable from them too!
